Most of the New Villages of West Malaysia were created to "resettle squatters" during the early years of the 1948-1960 Emergency. Some 500,000 people were settled into New Villages. In 2002, the New Village population was 1.25 million, of which about 82% were ethnic Chinese. Using a wide range of primary statistics and archival photographs this book sets out the history of New Villages and their present administrative structure, economic activities and social needs. The important 2005 Master Plan of the ministry of Housing and Local Government is summarized and discussed.
